1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I like wool, linen, and bamboo. I'm not particularly fond of flashy acrylic yarn or 100% cotton (it has no give).

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate, or advanced?
My mom taught me when I was in elementary school, but I've really been KNITTING for about 4 years now. I'd say I'm an intermediate.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

5. What's your favorite scent?
the ocean, freshly cut grass, spring rain

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Of course. Tootsie rolls, sour patch kids, fudge

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I don't really have the patience for spinning. I don't know if this is a Do-It-Yourself craft, but I like photography.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
Country, classic rock, classical, jazz - just about anything except for rap

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
I love bright fall day colors and most blues & greens. I really don't like neon or most pastels.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
One husband, one two-year old, one part-time twelve year old, and two loud dogs

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Scarves, hats, and mittens. I have one poncho that I used when Bear was an infant and needed to nurse in public.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Sweaters for myself and Bear, hats, and I have recently started knitting socks.

13. What are you knitting right now?
Rowan Flame Cowl, a PIF gift, socks for Bear, a vest, and two tanks that have been languishing on the needles for quite some time now.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yes - as long as they have a purpose. I am not a "dust collector" kind of girl a toilet paper cozy would be a waste of my SP's time.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Straight bamboo or addi turbo circulars. I cannot stand the scratching sound normal aluminum needles make together (I know, sacrilege, I'm sorry.)

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
17. How old is your oldest UFO?
3 years

18. What is your favorite holiday?
The 4th of July (LOVE the cookouts) and Christmas (LOVE the spirit of)

19. Is there anything that you collect?
Besides yarn? No.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I would like my own copy of A Gathering of Lace one day, the local library is getting tired of wiping the drool of theirs. I do have my own subscription to Interweave Knits though.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I want to try entrelac, magic loop, and needle felting.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes. Size 8 (women's/USA), 9 1/2 inches long, 8 1/2 inches around.

23. When is your birthday?
March 16th

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?
Yes. Meganlynn.

“The rules of the game get posted at the beginning. Each player answers the questions about themselves. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. A Day at the Zoo

This weekend Bear has been BEAR. It's been ugly and it's been brutal. So Andrew and I decided to reward the bad behavior with a trip to the zoo.

Just a side note, our new upstairs neighbors are either deaf or just very bad citizens - they listened to Bear scream "Let go of me!" for roughly an hour last night without calling the police. And in case you're thinking of picking up the phone, it was 2am and Andrew was trying to rub her back to calm her down. She DID NOT want to go to bed.

Anyway, the zoo's Flutterby butterfly exhibit opened this weekend. So just to forewarn you, the is a picture heavy post ahead. The exhibit is fantastic, as long as you don't count the five minutes spent in a very cramped, very hot, very small entry way listening to the rehearsed introduction. Claustrophobia anyone?

1 in 35 will have a butterfly land on them. This one landed on Bear as soon as we walked in the door.

The best part of the butterfly exhibit? The stamps at the end.

Crouching flamingo, hidden beak.

Getting a better look at the 'mingos.

Why do I bother to bathe her again?

that's actually in progress.

Some amazing progress on my Rowan Flame, considering it has been little more than a swatch for a year and a half. I think the halter version is headed for the frog pond. I don't think I'll ever actually wear it and the pattern is driving me crazy.

Summer of Yarn Love Swap Questionnaire

Do you knit or crochet? How long have you been at your craft?
knit - I learned from my mom as a child and really picked it up with a vengeance about three years ago

What are your favorite yarns/fibers? What are your least favorite yarns/fibers?
I love bamboo blends and linen, I'm not fond of frilly eyelash yarns or acrylics in general

I like sweaters for my 2-year old and I've recently started a love affair with socks

Rowan Flame (the cowel neck) is about three rows in, I have a few (OK a lot) of projects that are languishing on the needles that I would love to finish this summer

I think the striped hooded pullover I made for Bear last summer

What is your oldest UFO?
we're going on 3, 4 years now

Yes. Size 8 (women's/USA), 9 1/2 inches long, 8 1/2 inches around

Having a birthday this summer?

Are you allergic to anything??? Please let your pal know!
No, I just really don't like cigarette smoke.

Hey Look! Another FO!

I want to finish something pants. Or more accurately, shorts.

I had three skeins of Sausalito and a ball of some furry stuff from my shopping spree at the LYS that was closing. I started these with the intention of making pants, but three balls of Sausalito don't go as far as I thought they would. So now Bear has some new shorts. I have a few yards left that will become an applique lion for a matching t-shirt. I have no pattern notes, well, that I can find anyway so if you want to make a pair - you have my best wishes. :-)

I am the worst swap partner ever

or the best, depending on how patient you are.

My final swap packages routinely arrive days or even weeks after they are due. BUT the guilt I feel about that can be quantified by the amount of stuff I, well, stuff into that final box.

So my SITMT partner is FINALLY going to receive her final package. And I can finally start knitting (and blogging about knitting) again. See, I can't just start the sock or turn the heel in the five minute incriments I usually use to knit - you know when Bear is playing in the tub or while Andrew is driving us somewhere. But since I wasn't working on the socks, and I was feeling guilty about not working on the socks, I wasn't really working on anything.

Phew, am I glad that's over.

Now, as for my (pitaful) contest. I'm amending it. Four points to anyone who sent me a story (or sends me a story), four points for a picture, one point for a comment, one for sending someone here. Ends 5/23/08 when I check my comments. Prize will be some NH Knitting Mama hand dyed

It's my Blogoversary!

Thanks to Janey who pointed out that today is my blogoversary. Duh!

So obviously a contest is in order. And since I have a wedding coming up and have put off the gift making to the very end, that's where the contest comes in. No, you do not have to knit a wedding dress or send me cake to get a prize (though the cake thing can't hurt). What I want is your tales - I want to create a book (one of those photo books from Snapfish or Photobucket or wherever) with advice, stories, pictures, etc. for my cousin and his soon-to-be-wife. So send me your best advice for a pair of newlyweds, a funny story from your own wedding/commitment ceremony how you knew you had met "the one" or whatever bit you think should be included. Extra entries for emailing a non-copyrighted picture to go along with it and/or for sending friends. The contest ends a week from now, May 15th at 6:00pm EST. The winner(s) will be randomly drawn and will receive knitting goodness and a version of the photo book if they want one.

Example (real story, fake names)

My mother was recently admitted to the hospital, her cancer had spread. I am getting married in July and she will likely not make it to the wedding. Instead, my fiancee and I planned an impromptu wedding in her hospital room. The nurses decorated the room, nutrition services made dinner, the hospital got a local photographer to donate her time and skills for the night. It was beautiful. -Chris and Shawn, May 8, 2008

Thanks for playing.

In my inbox

Do people actually fall for this crap?

From Mrs Rebecca Williams
N [38 Rue Des Martyrs Cocody
Abidjan,Cote d'Ivoire

I am the above named person from Kuwait. I am married to Mr Benson Williams, who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year 2004. We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christian. Since his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of $2. 5 Million (Two Million Five Hundred U.S. Dollars) in the bank here in Abidjan in suspense account.

Presently, the fund is still with the bank. Recently, my Doctor told me that i have serious sickness which is cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness. Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to a church or individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct herein. I want a church that will use this fund for orphanages, widows, propagating the word of God and to endeavour that the house of God is maintained.

The Bible made us to understand that blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don’t have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don’t want my husband’s efforts to be used by unbelievers. I don’t want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This is why I am taking this decision. I am not afraid of death hence i know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the Lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace.

I don’t need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health hence the presence of my husband’s relatives is around me always I don't want them to know about this development. With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the bank here in Abidjan. I want you and the church to always pray for me because the Lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and Truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life.

Contact me on the above e-mail address for more information’s, any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing another church or individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I Stated herein. Hoping to receive your reply.

Remain blessed in the Lord.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs Rebecca Williams.
